Compassion: Seeing Others Through Christ’s Eyes

Compassion is one of the clearest reflections of the Savior’s love. It means noticing the struggles of others, feeling sympathy for their pain, and responding with kindness, mercy, and care. Compassion moves us beyond simply feeling sorry for someone. It inspires us to serve, encourage, comfort, and help however we can.

Throughout the New Testament, we see countless examples of Jesus showing compassion to others. When He saw people who were suffering, lonely, sick, or overwhelmed, He responded with love. Matthew 9:36 (KJV) tells us, “But when he saw the multitudes, he was moved with compassion on them.” Christ understood people’s burdens and reached out to them with healing, patience, and mercy.

As followers of Jesus Christ, we are called to do the same. Compassion helps us become more aware of the needs around us. It softens our hearts, strengthens our relationships, and reminds us that even small acts of kindness can make a lasting difference. Whether through service, encouragement, forgiveness, or simply listening, compassion allows us to reflect Christ’s light in the lives of others.

This month, we’re featuring four inspiring films on Living Scriptures+ that beautifully demonstrate the value of compassion. Each story reminds us of the power of kindness, empathy, and Christlike love.

The Letter Writer

The Letter Writer tells the touching story of a teenage girl named Maggie who receives a mysterious letter of encouragement from an elderly man named Sam. As she gets to know him, she begins to understand the quiet power of kindness and compassion.

Sam spends his time writing uplifting letters to people who may be struggling, lonely, or discouraged. His thoughtful words become a source of hope and healing to many. This film reminds us that compassion does not always require grand gestures. Sometimes a kind word, a thoughtful note, or taking time to truly listen can change someone’s life.

Ephesians 4:32 (KJV) teaches, “And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted.” Sam’s example shows what it means to live with a tender heart and care deeply for others.

Albert Schweitzer

Based on the true story of missionary and doctor Albert Schweitzer, this inspiring film follows a man who leaves behind comfort and success in order to serve people in need in Africa. Through sacrifice, hard work, and deep compassion, he dedicates his life to helping others.

Albert Schweitzer’s story is a powerful reminder that compassion often requires action. He recognized suffering around him and chose to respond with service and love. His life reflects the teaching found in Galatians 6:2 (KJV): “Bear ye one another’s burdens, and so fulfil the law of Christ.”

This film encourages us to look beyond our own lives and consider how we can serve those who are hurting or in need.

The Animated New Testament: The Miracles of Jesus

This animated retelling of Christ’s miracles beautifully captures the compassion of Jesus throughout His ministry. Whether healing the sick, comforting the grieving, or feeding the hungry, Jesus continually reached out to people with love and mercy.

One of the most powerful examples comes from Luke 7:13 (KJV): “And when the Lord saw her, he had compassion on her.” Jesus noticed people’s pain and responded with tenderness and care.

This film helps families and children see that Christ’s miracles were not only displays of power but also expressions of deep compassion. He cared about individuals and their struggles, and He still cares for us today.

Discussion Questions

Our Father's Keeper

Our Father’s Keeper tells the story of a family pushed to its limits after their father is diagnosed with early-onset Alzheimer’s disease. As fear, grief, and old tensions rise to the surface, the family must learn how to support one another through compassion, patience, and understanding.

This emotional story reminds us that compassion often means staying present for people during their hardest moments. Caring for someone through illness, disappointment, or personal struggle requires sacrifice, mercy, and grace. The film reflects the spirit of Colossians 3:12 (KJV): “Put on therefore… bowels of mercies, kindness, humbleness of mind, meekness, longsuffering.”

Our Father’s Keeper is a touching reminder that compassion can strengthen families, soften hearts, and help carry one another through life’s trials.

Discussion Questions

The Power of Compassion

Compassion reflects the heart of Jesus Christ. He saw people who were hurting and responded with mercy, healing, and love. When we choose compassion, we become instruments of that same love in the lives of others.

The world can often feel harsh and divided, but compassion brings hope and connection. It reminds people that they are seen, valued, and not alone. Even small acts of kindness can brighten someone’s day and point them toward Christ.

Compassion also changes us. It softens our hearts, teaches us patience, and helps us grow closer to God. As we learn to care more deeply for others, we become more like the Savior.
