Forgiveness: Finding Freedom Through Christ

Forgiveness is one of the most powerful expressions of Christlike love. It can be difficult to let go of hurt, disappointment, or even deep pain. Yet through Jesus Christ, we are given both the example and the strength to forgive. When we choose forgiveness, we open the door to healing, peace, and renewed relationships.

The gospel teaches us that forgiveness is central to our faith. In Ephesians 4:32 (KJV) we read, “Be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ’s sake hath forgiven you.” This verse reminds us that the forgiveness we offer others reflects the forgiveness we have received from God. It is not always easy, but it is always worth it.

Forgiveness does not mean forgetting the pain or pretending it never happened. It means choosing to release the burden and trust God to bring healing. It means letting go of anger so that love and peace can take its place. As we learn to forgive, we become more like Christ, who showed perfect love even in the face of suffering.

This month, we’re highlighting four inspiring films on Living Scriptures+ that beautifully illustrate the power of forgiveness. Each story shows that no matter how broken a situation may seem, forgiveness can lead to hope, healing, and new beginnings.

The Road Home

The Road Home tells the story of a troubled young woman whose life takes an unexpected turn. As she is forced to confront her past and face the consequences of her choices, she begins a journey toward healing and forgiveness.

Her story is one many of us can relate to. Sometimes the hardest part of forgiveness is facing our own mistakes. This film shows that true healing begins when we are willing to be honest, humble, and open to change. Forgiveness becomes the path that leads us forward.

As Psalm 51:10 (KJV) reminds us, “Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me.” Through God’s grace, even the most broken paths can lead us home again.

Stan the Man

After addiction leaves a former professional coach homeless, Stan is given a second chance when he is asked to help a small Christian school football team. As he struggles to overcome his past, he must face his mistakes and begin rebuilding his life through faith, humility, and forgiveness.

Stan’s journey is a powerful reminder that forgiveness is something we receive as well as something we give. Many people carry guilt and shame that keep them from moving forward. Through God’s grace, Stan begins to find healing, purpose, and hope again.

His story reflects the promise found in 1 John 1:9 (KJV): “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” God’s forgiveness is always available, and it has the power to transform lives.

Champion

Champion follows the story of a race car driver whose life is marked by pride, broken relationships, and poor choices. As his world begins to fall apart, he is forced to confront his past and the people he has hurt.

Through faith and humility, he begins to understand the importance of forgiveness—both giving it and receiving it. His journey shows that forgiveness is often the first step toward true change. It opens the door to redemption and restores what once seemed lost.

As Colossians 3:13 (KJV) teaches, “Forbearing one another, and forgiving one another… even as Christ forgave you, so also do ye.” Forgiveness is not just an act of kindness—it is a command that leads us to freedom.

Animated Old Testament: Joseph’s Reunion

The story of Joseph is one of the most powerful examples of forgiveness in the Bible. After being betrayed and sold into slavery by his own brothers, Joseph rises to a position of great responsibility in Egypt. When he is reunited with his family years later, he has the opportunity to seek revenge—but instead, he chooses forgiveness.

This animated retelling brings Joseph’s story to life for families and children. It shows that even deep betrayal can be overcome with faith and compassion. Joseph recognizes that God had a greater plan all along, turning his suffering into something meaningful.

Joseph’s words in Genesis 50:20 (KJV) capture this beautifully: “But as for you, ye thought evil against me; but God meant it unto good.” Forgiveness allows us to see beyond the hurt and trust that God can bring good from even the hardest situations.

Why Forgiveness Matters

Forgiveness matters because it reflects the very heart of Jesus Christ. He forgave freely, even when it cost Him everything. On the cross, He prayed, “Father, forgive them” (Luke 23:34), showing us the depth of His love.

When we hold onto anger or resentment, it weighs us down. It keeps us stuck in the past and prevents us from experiencing peace. But when we choose forgiveness, we release that burden and allow God to heal our hearts.

Forgiveness also strengthens our relationships. It creates space for understanding, growth, and connection. It reminds us that no one is perfect and that we all need grace. When we extend that grace to others, we reflect God’s love in a powerful way.

Living a Life of Forgiveness

Forgiveness is not always a one-time decision. Sometimes it is a process that takes time, prayer, and patience. It requires humility and a willingness to trust God with our pain.

Living a life of forgiveness means choosing compassion over resentment and grace over judgment. It means remembering how much we have been forgiven and extending that same mercy to others.

In everyday life, forgiveness might look like letting go of a harsh word, offering a second chance, or choosing peace instead of conflict. These small choices can have a lasting impact.

Each of the films featured this month reminds us that forgiveness changes lives. Whether it’s returning home, overcoming addiction, healing from betrayal, or finding redemption, every story points back to Christ—the ultimate source of forgiveness.
