Courage: Standing Firm in Faith

Courage is more than bravery in the face of danger. As Christians, courage is the willingness to do what is right, even when it is difficult, unpopular, or requires sacrifice. Christlike courage comes from trusting God and believing that He will guide and strengthen us through life’s challenges.

Throughout scripture, we see examples of ordinary people who demonstrated extraordinary courage because of their faith. One of the most well-known is David, who faced the giant Goliath armed with only a sling, a few stones, and complete trust in God. While others saw an impossible obstacle, David saw an opportunity for God to show His power. His example reminds us that courage is not the absence of fear. It is choosing faith over fear.

The Bible encourages us in Joshua 1:9 (KJV): “Have not I commanded thee? Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed: for the LORD thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest.” When we remember that God is with us, we can face difficult circumstances with confidence and hope.

This month, we’re featuring four inspiring films on Living Scriptures+ that demonstrate the value of courage in different ways. Each story reminds us that faith, perseverance, and integrity often require bravery.

Forever Strong

Forever Strong follows a talented rugby player whose poor choices lead him down a difficult path. As he joins a new team, he learns lessons about character, accountability, and what it truly means to be strong.

The courage in this story comes from choosing to change. It takes bravery to admit mistakes, accept responsibility, and commit to a better path. Through the influence of mentors and teammates, the main character learns that real strength comes from integrity and self-discipline.

As Proverbs 28:13 (KJV) teaches, “He that covereth his sins shall not prosper: but whoso confesseth and forsaketh them shall have mercy.” Courage often begins with honesty.

Discussion Questions

  • What choices did the main character make that required courage?
  • How is courage different from physical strength?
  • Why is it sometimes difficult to admit mistakes and change direction?
  • What role did mentors and teammates play in helping him grow?
  • How can courage help us make better choices in our own lives?

MountainTop: A Journey of Faith

MountainTop: A Journey of Faith follows a small-town pastor who once practiced law but left that career behind to serve God. When an unusual court case unexpectedly draws him back into the courtroom, he finds himself facing difficult questions about faith, calling, and obedience. As the case unfolds, he must decide whether he will follow God’s leading, even when the path is uncertain.

This story reminds us that courage is often found in obedience. Sometimes God asks us to step outside our comfort zones, trust Him with unanswered questions, or stand firm in our convictions when others doubt us. True courage comes from believing that God is guiding our steps, even when we cannot see the whole picture.

The film reflects the promise found in Proverbs 3:5-6 (KJV): “Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.” When we trust God’s direction, we can move forward with courage and confidence.

Discussion Questions

  • What challenges did the pastor face when he was called back into the courtroom?
  • Why do you think it takes courage to follow God’s direction when the outcome is uncertain?
  • Have you ever felt prompted to do something that seemed difficult or uncomfortable?
  • How did faith influence the decisions made throughout the story?
  • What can we learn about trusting God from the example of the pastor?

Faith Under Fire

Faith Under Fire tells the story of individuals whose beliefs are tested during difficult circumstances. As they face opposition and challenges, they must decide whether to stand firm in their convictions.

This story highlights moral courage—the courage to stay true to your beliefs even when it would be easier to compromise. Standing for truth often requires faith, perseverance, and trust in God’s promises.

Psalm 27:1 (KJV) reminds us, “The LORD is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear?” When our confidence is rooted in Christ, we can face opposition with courage and peace.

One of the most powerful examples comes from Luke 7:13 (KJV): “And when the Lord saw her, he had compassion on her.” Jesus noticed people’s pain and responded with tenderness and care.

This film helps families and children see that Christ’s miracles were not only displays of power but also expressions of deep compassion. He cared about individuals and their struggles, and He still cares for us today.

Discussion Questions

  • Which miracle stood out to you the most, and why?
  • How did Jesus show compassion to people in need?
  • What can we learn from the way Jesus treated others?

The Animated Old Testament: Daniel

Daniel’s story is one of the greatest examples of courage in scripture. Even when a law prohibited prayer, Daniel continued to worship God faithfully. His commitment eventually led him to the lions’ den, but he refused to compromise his faith.

Daniel’s courage came from knowing and trusting God. He chose obedience over safety and faith over fear. His example teaches us that courage often means standing firm when others pressure us to do otherwise.

The Bible tells us in Daniel 6:23 (KJV): “No manner of hurt was found upon him, because he believed in his God.” Daniel’s trust in the Lord gave him the courage to remain faithful.

Discussion Questions

  • Why did Daniel continue praying even when it was dangerous?
  • What gave Daniel the courage to stand firm in his faith?
  • How did God bless Daniel’s faithfulness?
  • What situations today might require similar courage?
  • How can we strengthen our trust in God like Daniel did?

The Strength to Do What Is Right

Courage is not reserved for heroes in scripture or characters in movies. It is a value we can develop every day. We show courage when we tell the truth, stand up for others, make difficult choices, and remain faithful during challenges.

Christlike courage grows as we trust God more fully. The more we rely on His strength, the more confident we become in facing life’s obstacles. Courage allows us to live with integrity, follow our convictions, and remain faithful even when the path is difficult.

Whether we’re facing a major challenge or making a simple daily decision, God promises to be with us. His presence gives us the strength to move forward with faith.
