Come Follow Me

with

Succor the Weak

Reinforces this week’s “Come Follow Me” study: Doctrine & Covenants 81-83
Where “Much Is Given Much Is Required”

Scripture:

Doctrine and Covenants 81:5

“Wherefore, be faithful; stand in the office which I have appointed unto you; succor the weak, lift up the hands which hang down, and strengthen the feeble knees.”

Song:

I’m Trying to Be Like Jesus Children’s Songbook page 78

Lesson:

Frederick G. Williams was called as a counselor in the First Presidency. In section 81, some of the duties of the First Presidency are given, including the call to “succor the weak, lift up the hands which hang down, and strengthen the feeble knees.” The Lord was asking him, and us, to serve those who need help.

In sections 82 and 83, the Lord specifically asks us to care for the poor, the widows, and orphans, “every man seeking the interest of his neighbor, and doing all things with an eye single to the glory of God.” (D&C 82:19)

Loving God and our neighbors are the two greatest commandments. By keeping these commandments, we are promised great blessings.

Quote:

“I extol you who, with loving care and compassionate concern, feed the hungry, clothe the naked, and house the homeless. He who notes the sparrow’s fall will not be unmindful of such service. The desire to lift, the willingness to help, and the graciousness to give come from a heart filled with love. Serve willingly.”
– Thomas S. Monson
