Even with incredibly strong faith in God’s mercy and plan, the death of a loved one is a painful and often long experience. Losing someone you love can cause great heartache, and the grief you feel is an expression of that deep love; you can’t overlook that pain.
Neither God nor the Bible overlooks that pain, either. The words found throughout scripture speak tenderly to those who mourn, acknowledging their sorrow and inviting both sincere lamentation and a bright hope.
If you need a reminder of spiritual truths during this time of hurt and possibly confusion, turning to Jesus Christ and his Word is a retreat of solace. These short Bible verses related to the death of a loved one are meant to anchor you in the truth of God’s promises and help you draw near to Him during this time.
How Scripture Brings Comfort in Seasons of Grief
As you turn to the scriptures, remember these promises from God and take comfort in their power.
God Draws Near to the Brokenhearted
The Bible repeatedly reminds us that the Lord is close to those who are hurting. He does not stand far off from our sorrow, but meets us in it with compassion and a perfect understanding. It does not show a lack of faith to be sad or deeply frustrated by your loss, and Jesus Christ will fill this space of mourning with you.
We Do Not Grieve Alone
God designed His people to carry one another through seasons of loss. Family members, church communities, and faithful friends reflect His comfort as they sit with us, pray for us, and mourn alongside us. Grief shared is not grief erased, but it’s one of our greatest callings to mourn with those who mourn.
Hope Beyond the Grave
Scripture offers something the world cannot: the promise that death is not the final word. Through Jesus Christ, believers hold to the hope of resurrection and eternal life.

When Jesus died, His disciples and followers, and His mother were more than devastated; we see that “Mary stood outside the tomb crying” in John 20:11. Those emotions and experiences not only showed the love Mary and others had for Christ, but it was a tribute to His life and influence on earth.
And even in mourning, there is quiet confidence that God’s purposes continue beyond what we can see, as we see when Christ defeated death. We can trust in His promises and the peace that follows us after this earthly life.
