Gentleness: Reflecting the Heart of Christ

Gentleness is one of the most beautiful expressions of the Christian faith. It’s not about being soft-spoken or weak but about showing strength through kindness, humility, and compassion. True gentleness flows from a heart that trusts God and seeks to love others the way He loves us.

The Bible describes gentleness as a fruit of the Spirit—evidence of God’s work within us. It shapes how we speak, how we serve, and how we respond when life gets difficult.

2 Timothy 2:24–25 gives us a clear picture of what this looks like in practice:

“And the servant of the Lord must not strive; but be gentle unto all men, apt to teach, patient, in meekness instructing those that oppose themselves; if God peradventure will give them repentance to the acknowledging of the truth.”

These verses remind us that a gentle heart does not seek to win arguments or prove others wrong. Instead, it seeks to show Christ’s love through patience, humility, and grace. Gentleness is the quiet strength that helps us reflect Jesus: calm in spirit, firm in faith, and kind in action.

This month, we’re highlighting four inspiring films on Living Scriptures+ that bring this value to life. Each one tells a story of someone who chooses compassion over anger, love over pride, and faith over fear.

No Ordinary Shepherd

No Ordinary Shepherd is a tender story about a young shepherd boy who encounters Jesus after hearing the story of His birth from his father. When the boy later meets the Savior face to face, his life changes forever.

This simple yet powerful film shows the gentleness of Christ — His care for the humble, His kindness to the overlooked, and His ability to bring peace to troubled hearts. The young shepherd reminds us that gentleness begins with recognizing who Jesus is and allowing His love to transform the way we see and treat others.

Gentleness isn’t just an action; it’s a reflection of knowing we are deeply loved by God. When we grasp that truth, we naturally want to extend the same love to those around us.

My Many Sons

My Many Sons tells the inspiring true story of basketball coach Don Meyer, one of the most successful coaches in college history. After a near-fatal car accident, Coach Meyer faces a long recovery, both physically and spiritually. Through his pain, he learns that leadership isn’t about power or prestige — it’s about serving others with humility.

This film captures the essence of gentleness in action. Coach Meyer’s quiet influence, care for his players, and willingness to listen show that gentleness can change lives in ways force and pride never could.

As Proverbs 15:1 (KJV) reminds us, “A soft answer turneth away wrath: but grievous words stir up anger.” Coach Meyer’s example demonstrates that when we lead with patience and compassion, we create space for others to grow, heal, and believe again.

The Letter Writer

The Letter Writer tells the touching story of a teenage girl named Maggie who receives a mysterious, heartfelt letter from an unknown man. As she sets out to find him, she meets Sam, an elderly writer who spends his days sending letters of encouragement to strangers. Through his example, Maggie learns the value of kindness, empathy, and taking time to care for others.

This story beautifully captures the heart of gentleness. Sam’s words are thoughtful and full of grace, showing that even small acts of compassion can have a lasting impact. His example mirrors the spirit of 2 Timothy 2:24–25 (KJV) — being “gentle unto all men” and “patient” in teaching and love.

The Letter Writer reminds us that gentleness isn’t always about grand gestures; sometimes it’s a soft word, a listening ear, or a note of encouragement that can change someone’s day — or even their life.

The Animated Old Testament: Ruth

The story of Ruth is one of the Bible’s most moving examples of gentleness and loyalty. After losing her husband, Ruth chooses to stay with her mother-in-law Naomi, showing remarkable devotion and humility. Her kindness and faithfulness eventually lead her to Boaz, whose own gentleness and integrity reflect God’s care for His people.

This animated retelling brings their story to life for families and children, showing that gentleness often grows out of love and trust. Ruth’s willingness to serve and Boaz’s compassion toward her both reveal that God works through tender hearts to accomplish His purposes.

Ruth’s story aligns perfectly with Galatians 5:22–23 (KJV): “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith.” Gentleness, rooted in love, allows us to reflect God’s goodness in everyday life — in our families, friendships, and even in difficult circumstances.

Why Gentleness Matters

Gentleness begins in the small moments. It’s in how we speak to others when we’re frustrated, how we handle conflict, and how we choose to forgive. It’s found in listening more than we speak, serving more than we expect to be served, and loving when it’s inconvenient.

When we let the Spirit cultivate gentleness in us, we begin to look more like Jesus. And as others see that in our lives, they see Him too.

Each of the films featured this month reminds us that gentleness changes lives. Whether it’s a shepherd boy encountering the Savior in No Ordinary Shepherd, a coach leading through humility in My Many Sons, an elderly man sharing grace through simple acts of kindness in The Letter Writer, or Ruth showing loyalty and compassion in The Animated Old Testament: Ruth—every story points back to Jesus, the ultimate example of gentleness.
