Paul wrote several letters to the church to teach the gospel and unify the members of the church. One of the letters he wrote was to the church members in Rome – to the Romans.
Some of the church members in Rome were Jews who had grown up obeying the Law of Moses. Some of the church members were Gentiles (not Jews). They disagreed on which laws they should be obedient to. Were they still required to keep the Jewish laws, like eating certain foods, or doing certain things on the Sabbath? Some laws, such as animal sacrifice, were fulfilled through Jesus Christ’s atonement and didn’t need to be practiced anymore.
Paul taught the people about the Grace of God. He told the people that they weren’t saved just because they kept the laws of Moses, but because of the gift of Grace Jesus had given us through His Atonement. Paul taught that anyone could receive that gift, whether they were Jews or Gentiles. He taught the people that they should have faith in Jesus Christ. We show our faith in Jesus Christ and our love for Him by keeping His commandments. Being obedient can also strengthen our faith in Jesus Christ and helps us to change our hearts to become more like Him. Through His Grace, we also receive strength and courage to do what He wants us to do.
“Grace is a gift of God, and our desire to be obedient to each of God’s commandments is the reaching out of our mortal hand to receive this sacred gift from our Heavenly Father.”
Dieter F. Uchtdorf

How will doing these things strengthen our faith in Jesus Christ and change our hearts? (Discuss ideas)
It's important to be obedient, but it's also important to be obedient for the right reasons. Learn how what we do on the outside can help us change on the inside, and how we feel on the inside will change what we do on the outside.
