Video Spotlight: Harriet Tubman

Most kids are excited for Monday because they’ll get the day off from school. But parents have reason to look forward to Martin Luther King, Jr. Day as well. It’s a great opportunity for parents to teach their children how much God loves all of His children, the dangers of racism, and the importance of the Civil Right movement.

But how can parents start such a serious discussion with their young children? Living Scriptures can help. Watching Harriet Tubman from the Animated Hero Classics II collection is an easy way to introduce young children to the subject of race, and older children and adults can learn and be inspired by film, which is based on the true events of Harriet Tubman’s life.

Born into slavery around 1822, Harriet was able to escape to freedom as a young woman through the Underground Railroad. She later went on 13 missions to rescue family members and other slaves—about 70 people in all. In all her trips, she never lost a passenger, and she earned the nickname of Moses.

But Harriet wasn’t done there. She eventually worked as a cook, nurse, and even a spy for the Union Army during the Civil War. She was the first woman to lead an expedition in the war, and a raid she led liberated over 700 slaves. After the war, Harriet offered her home as a refuge for her family members and other freed slaves in need of a place to stay. She also became involved in the women’s suffrage movement.

What gave Harriet Tubman her courage and drive? In addition to her dedication to freedom, Harriet was also a devoted Christian. She had learned Bible stories from her mother as a child and found hope in the Old Testament’s great stories of deliverance. She also consulted often with God in her work with the Underground Railroad. It was said of her, “I never met with any person of any color who had more confidence in the voice of God, as spoken direct to her soul.”

Take the chance to teach your children the importance of standing up for love and justice. Remind them that God can inspire and help them in every good cause. Sit down with your children and watch Harriet Tubman.
