with

Declare My Word

Reinforces this week’s “Come Follow Me” study: Doctrine & Covenants 30-36
“You Are Called to Preach My Gospel”

Scripture:

Doctrine & Covenants 31:3

“Lift up your heart and rejoice, for the hour of your mission is come; and your tongue shall be loosed, and you shall declare glad tidings of great joy unto this generation.”

Song:

I Want to Be a Missionary Now Children’s Songbook page 64

Lesson:

Peter Whitmer, Oliver Cowdery, Ziba Petersen, and Parley P. Pratt were called on a mission to the Lamanites. With faith, they began their journey to the Missouri frontier. Along the way, they stopped to visit Sidney Rigdon in Ohio. Sidney Rigdon led a congregation of Christians, and as his testimony grew of the Restored Church, he shared what he learned with his congregation. Over 100 people were baptized there. Although they weren’t able to baptize any of the American Indians they hoped to teach, their mission brought many new members into the Church.

Sometimes the Lord calls us to do things to help us learn and grow. He teaches us to follow and trust in Him. He asks us to “open our mouths” and share the gospel message with others. As we do, we can help the Lord fulfill His work.

Quote:

Why every member a missionary? Because that is what the Lord has asked us to do. Prayerfully consider it. There are those who would forever call you the angel of understanding and compassion that led them to the truth, fortified them in their faith, or helped them learn to serve the Lord. Richard G. Scott

Q&A:

  • Was the mission to the Lamanites a success? Why or why not?
  • How does the Lord help us to share the gospel?
  • What can we do to prepare ourselves to be good missionaries whether we serve full-time or not?

Activity idea:

"Feed My Sheep" Relay

1. As a family write down ways you can "feed His sheep."
2. Have a relay race to see which team can feed the sheep fastest.

Treat idea:

"Build Upon My Rock" Toffee

D&C 33:13 reminds us to build upon the rock of the gospel. This toffee rock is a fun treat you can eat while you discuss this scripture.
