Come Follow Me

with

Both Sides of the Veil

Reinforces this week’s “Come Follow Me” study: Doctrine & Covenants 137-138
“The Vision of the Redemption of the Dead”

Scripture:

Doctrine and Covenants 138:30

“But behold, from among the righteous, he organized his forces and appointed messengers, clothed with power and authority, and commissioned them to go forth and carry the light of the gospel to them that were in darkness, even to all the spirits of men; and thus was the gospel preached to the dead.

Lesson:

In January of 1836, Joseph Smith saw a vision of his father, his mother, and his brother Alvin in the celestial kingdom of God. Joseph knew that his brother had not been baptized and wondered how it was possible that he was there. Alvin had died before the priesthood had been restored. Joseph learned that “all those who have died without a knowledge of this gospel, who would have received it if they had been permitted to tarry, shall be heirs of the celestial kingdom of God (D&C 137:7)”.

Over 80 years later, after praying to understand a passage of scripture, Joseph F. Smith received a revelation describing Jesus Christ’s visit to the spirit world after He had been crucified, but before He was resurrected. Jesus Christ taught the gospel to the righteous spirits there and appointed messengers to teach the gospel to the unrighteous and those who had died without a knowledge of the truth. Missionary work is taking place on both sides of the veil so all may have the opportunity to choose to be redeemed through the Atonement of Jesus Christ.

Quote:

“Our message to the world is simple and sincere: we invite all of God’s children on both sides of the veil to come unto their Savior, receive the blessings of the holy temple, have enduring joy, and qualify for eternal life.”  Russell M. Nelson

Q&A:

  • What do you think the celestial kingdom will be like?
  • How can we prepare ourselves to live in the celestial kingdom?
  • What did the Savior do when He visited the spirit world?
  • Why is it important to know that missionary work is being done on both sides of the veil?
