Lesson:

As Paul continued his message to the Corinthians, he encouraged them to be unified and show love to each other. He compared the members of the church to members (or parts) of a body. Just as each part of your body helps the rest of your body to function, each member of the church is needed. Each of us has spiritual gifts that we can use to help each other and to serve God. (See 1 Corinthians 12:8-11 for a list of spiritual gifts Paul mentions.)

If one part of our body is hurt or sick, we try to make it well again. If someone else is hurt or afflicted, we should try to help them feel well again too.  We can work together to lift and love each other, just like Jesus did.

Paul taught about a special kind of love called charity. When we have charity, we put others before ourselves. (See 1 Corinthians 13:4-8 for Paul’s description of charity.)

Quote:

“The unity we seek in our families and in the Church will come as we allow the Holy Ghost to affect what we see when we look at one another—and even when we think of each other. The Spirit sees with the pure love of Christ.”
Henry B. Eyring

Q&A:

  • How are members of the church like members of a body?
  • What are some ways we can help others in our ward and neighborhood?
  • How does helping each other help us be unified?
  • What is a spiritual gift? What spiritual gifts do we have in our family?
  • How can we help each other using our spiritual gifts?
  • What is charity? (See 1 Corinthians 13:4-8 for Paul’s description of charity.)
  • How can we develop the spiritual gift of charity?

Activity idea:

Members of a Body

Use this activity page to illustrate that just as every member of a body helps the body to work properly, every member of our family, our ward, our church, and our Heavenly Father's family is needed.

Treat idea:

Friendship Cookies

Cookies are delicious, but they're even better when they're shared! Make a batch of cookies and share them with friends, family, or neighbors who could use a smile and a thoughtful treat.

These lessons are perfect for Family Home Evening at the beginning of the week, or to recap the following Sunday. Or use portions of the lesson throughout the week to enhance your family scripture study.
