“The Power of Godliness”

Scripture:

Doctrine & Covenants 84:40

Therefore, all those who receive the priesthood, receive this oath and covenant of my Father, which he cannot break, neither can it be moved.

Song:

The Priesthood is Restored, Children’s Songbook page 89

Lesson:

In this revelation, the Lord teaches how the holy priesthood was passed down from Adam through Moses, and then a lesser priesthood was conferred upon Aaron and his children. The greater priesthood we call the Melchizedek Priesthood (because Abraham was ordained by Melchizedek) and the lesser priesthood we call the Aaronic Priesthood. Offices such as high priest, bishop, and elder are offices of the Melchizedek Priesthood. Offices such as priest, teacher, and deacon are offices of the Aaronic Priesthood. Those who are ordained to the priesthood make covenants (sacred promises) with God to stay worthy and help and bless other people. Each office has specific authority and  responsibilities. All are needed to help the Church function properly.

Quote:

“Priesthood is the greatest power on earth. Worlds were created by and through the priesthood. To safeguard this sacred power, all priesthood holders act under the direction of those who hold the keys of the priesthood. These keys bring order into our lives and into the organization of the Church. For us, priesthood power is the power and authority delegated by God to act in His name for the salvation of His children. Caring for others is the very essence of priesthood responsibility.”  James E. Faust
