Come, Follow Me

Prepare the Way

Reinforces this week’s “Come Follow Me” study: John 1
We have found the Messiah

John 1: 6-9

6 There was a man sent from God, whose name was John.

7 The same came for a witness, to bear witness of the Light, that all men through him might believe.

8 He was not that Light, but was sent to bear witness of that Light.

9 That was the true Light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world.

John the Baptist was chosen to be a prophet to prepare the way for Jesus Christ. He taught the people about Jesus Christ and prepared them to receive his gospel. He bore testimony that Jesus Christ was the Son of God.

Many people listened to John’s testimony and wanted to know more about Jesus Christ. When Jesus Christ came, they were prepared to listen to him, and they also believed he was the Son of God. (John 1:35-46)

We can prepare the way for Jesus Christ in our hearts by learning about him and following his teachings. As we gain a testimony of Jesus Christ we can share our testimonies with others. By sharing our testimonies, we can help others be prepared to listen to the gospel message and believe in Jesus Christ.

Jesus Christ is the “True Light” John spoke of. He is our example and shows us the way we should go. (John 1:9)

“Jesus Christ is the light of the world because he is the source of the light that quickens our understanding, because his teachings and his example illuminate our path, and because his power persuades us to do good.” Dallin H. Oaks

In John 1: 23 John the Baptist explains, “I am the voice of one crying in the wilderness, Make straight the way of the Lord”. What does it mean to “make straight the way of the Lord”? (Discuss ideas.)

How can we “make straight the way of the Lord?” (Discuss ideas)

How can we strengthen our testimonies of Jesus Christ? (Discuss ideas)

In what ways can we share our testimonies with others? (Discuss ideas)

Activity idea:

Red Light, Green Light

John the Baptist said that he was not the light, but he was sent to bear witness of the light. In this game, the red light tells you to stop and wait, and the green light tells you to go. Watch for and follow the right color of light.

Treat idea:

Prepare the Way Parfait

The pudding is prepared ahead of time so it is ready for the toppings to be added. John prepared the way by teaching about Jesus Christ so they would be ready to listen and learn when he came. We can prepare ourselves to learn and listen to the messages Jesus teaches us.
