Stories of inspiring women dot every book of the Bible. But have you ever noticed how many of those stories are specifically about motherhood?
Most people probably think first of Mary. She must have been an amazingly righteous and humble woman to be chosen as the mother of Jesus.
Other oft-told stories center on and those who had to wait many years to become mothers; those women include women like Sarah, Rebekah, Rachel, and Hannah.
But even scriptural women who aren’t as well known, such as the widow of Zarephath, were also known primarily as mothers.
Why is that? Is it simply because most women in ancient times became mothers? Perhaps. Or maybe the real reason has more to do with the importance God places on motherhood. After all, every great man or woman was born to a mother, and most of them were raised by mothers.
Some people doubt how much God actually cares about mothers. They may ask questions such as these:
“If being a mother is such a blessing, then why did God make so many women in the Bible wait for so long to have children?”
“If these mothers in the scriptures were so righteous, why did God make them go through so many hard things?”
“Since motherhood is so different today, what does God expect us to learn about these mothers from thousands of years ago?”
Why don’t we try to find out? You will probably be impressed by how many of life’s most important lessons and examples were given to the world by mothers.
Over the next couple of weeks before Mother’s Day, we’re going to celebrate these key people in our lives, and we hope you’ll join in! Most importantly, find ways in the next few weeks to thank the special women in your life. And while you’re at it, thank God for them, too!
