1 Kings 17:15
“And she went and did according to the saying of Elijah: and she, and he, and her house, did eat many days.”
I’m Trying to Be Like Jesus, Children’s Songbook page 78
Elijah asked God to allow a famine upon the land because of the wickedness of King Ahab. As Elijah traveled, the Lord told him that he should drink from the brook and that ravens would bring him food. Because of the famine, the brook dried up, and the Lord told Elijah to go to the Widow of Zarephath and she would give him food and water.
The Widow of Zarephath was preparing to make a last meal for herself and her son with the last bit of food they had. She prayed for help. Elijah came and promised her that if she would feed him first, she would never run out of food. With faith, the Widow made a small cake and served it to Elijah. Just as the Lord through Elijah promised, her meal and oil never ran out.
We can show our neighbors that we love them by providing service. In the scriptures we learn that our neighbors are everyone around us. We can show service in many ways. We can say a kind word, write a friendly note, help someone with their work, or provide things they need. When we serve those around us, we are also serving God.
“I extol you who, with loving care and compassionate concern, feed the hungry, clothe the naked, and house the homeless. He who notes the sparrow’s fall will not be unmindful of such service. The desire to lift, the willingness to help, and the graciousness to give come from a heart filled with love. Serve willingly.”
Thomas S. Monson
