Micah 7:18-19
“Who is a God like unto thee, that pardoneth iniquity, and passeth by the transgression of the remnant of his heritage? He retaineth not his anger for ever, because he delighteth in mercy. He will turn again, he will have compassion upon us; he will subdue our iniquities; and wilt cast all their sins into the depths of the sea.”
Follow the Prophet (verse 7), Children’s Songbook page 110
Jonah was called to cry repentance to Ninevah. Ninevah was in Assyria, and they were enemies of Israel. Jonah didn’t want to go there, so he headed in the opposite direction. He boarded a boat headed to Tarshish. While on the ship, a terrible storm arose. Jonah knew it was because he was running away from the Lord. He told the sailors to toss him into the sea and the storm would be calmed. After he was tossed overboard, a giant fish swallowed Jonah. He spent three days in the belly of the fish praying until the fish finally spit him out on the shore. God was merciful to Jonah and gave him a second chance. Jonah repented and went to Ninevah. He called the people of Ninevah to repentance and they listened! God’s mercy allowed the Ninevites to repent and be saved.
Micah prophesied about the coming destruction of Israel, and he also prophesied about the coming birth of Jesus Christ, saying that He would be born in Bethlehem. He also prophesied of the last days and God’s mercy to the House of Israel.
“Because we are not immune to calamities, we must learn from them. While the scriptures show the consequences of disobedience, they also show what can happen when people listen to the Lord and heed His counsel. When the wicked city of Nineveh heard the warning voice of the prophet Jonah, they cried mightily to the Lord, repented, and were saved from destruction.” Joseph B. Wirthlin
