Come, Follow Me

with

With God Nothing Shall Be Impossible

Reinforces this week’s “Come Follow Me” study: Matthew 1, Luke 1
Be it Unto Me According to Thy Word

Scripture:

Luke 1:36-38

“And, behold, thy cousin Elisabeth, she hath also conceived a son in her old age: and this is the sixth month with her, who was called barren. For with God nothing shall be impossible.  And Mary said, Behold the handmaid of the Lord; be it unto me according to thy word. And the angel departed from her.”

Lesson:

Elizabeth and Zacharias had prayed for a long time for a child. They both grew old and never had any children. One day, an angel came to Zacharias and told him that his wife would bear a child, a boy whose name should be John. Zacharias didn’t believe the angel – he thought that he and his wife were too old to have a child. The angel told him that “with God, nothing shall be impossible.” Elizabeth did have a son, and his name was John. He would prepare the way for Jesus Christ as a prophet, and he would baptize Jesus.

Mary was chosen to be the mother of Jesus, the Son of God. When an angel came to tell her that she would be the mother of the Messiah, she must have felt overwhelmed. But she said to the angel, ”be it unto me according to thy word” (Luke 1:38). She was willing to accept God’s will, even if she didn’t quite understand yet.

It can be helpful to remember this story whenever we face something impossible, or it seems that God isn’t hearing our prayers. God has a plan for us, and sometimes we need to be patient and willing to trust God.

Quote:

“Some blessings come soon, some come late, and some don’t come until heaven; but for those who embrace the gospel of Jesus Christ, they come.” Jeffrey R. Holland

Q&A:

  • How did Zacharias and Elizabeth remain faithful?
  • Do you find yourself waiting for a blessing?
  • What do you feel the Lord expects of you while you wait?
  • What can we learn from Zacharias and Elizabeth about accepting God’s will? What can we learn from Mary?
  • Does Heavenly Father always answer our prayers in the way we expect?
  • How can we learn to accept God’s will and timing?

Activity idea:

Scripture Pictionary

To help your family build faith that "with God nothing shall be impossible", review a few scripture stories in which God did seemingly impossible things. Then play Pictionary and have family members take turns drawing and guessing which scripture story is drawn.

Treat idea:

Impossible Chocolate Pie

Just because we think something might be impossible, doesn't mean it can't happen! In this dessert, all the ingredients are mixed together, but as it bakes, one layer settles to the bottom to become a crust, the coconut rises to the top as a topping, and a yummy chocolate custard fills the center!

These lessons are perfect for Family Home Evening at the beginning of the week, or to recap the following Sunday. Or use portions of the lesson throughout the week to enhance your family scripture study.
