Elizabeth and Zacharias had prayed for a long time for a child. They both grew old and never had any children. One day, an angel came to Zacharias and told him that his wife would bear a child, a boy whose name should be John. Zacharias didn’t believe the angel – he thought that he and his wife were too old to have a child. The angel told him that “with God, nothing shall be impossible.” Elizabeth did have a son, and his name was John. He would prepare the way for Jesus Christ as a prophet, and he would baptize Jesus.

Mary was chosen to be the mother of Jesus, the Son of God. When an angel came to tell her that she would be the mother of the Messiah, she must have felt overwhelmed. But she said to the angel, ”be it unto me according to thy word” (Luke 1:38). She was willing to accept God’s will, even if she didn’t quite understand yet.

It can be helpful to remember this story whenever we face something impossible, or it seems that God isn’t hearing our prayers. God has a plan for us, and sometimes we need to be patient and willing to trust God.
