Joseph and his father Joseph Smith Senior had gone to Harmony to work for a farmer named Josiah Stowell. After just a month into the project Josiah abandoned his project and so Joseph ‘s father returned home to Palmyra, but Joseph stayed longer to work on other farms locally.

During their one month job Joseph and his father boarded with the Hale family, this is how they met.
